ISG Members ——VERY IMPORTANT
The issue is a very tricky one, and causes angst on all forums.
I will comment on the same, but as part of a more general comment on forums i participate on :
I participate actively on 3 forums : MMB, ISG & a network54.com forum (a pvt one, which i will refer to as N54 hereon ..).
MMB boards are organised by company name, so while it may be easy to find messages on a particular company, the disadvantage is that one could spend years on MMB & never discover the true “ace stock- pickers”, as you might just fail to visit the boards of the companies that these guys have recommended. So it is my least preferred forum.
On ISG & N54, the messages are ordered by latest post, which i prefer, as it allows me to within a few minutes get a birds-eye view of what topics have been discussed since my last visit. It is important of course that the topic name be properly named, else one may skip reading the same & miss a hidden gem therein.
While ISG has allowed free membership, N54 has a limited membership which is by recommendation only. Both have their pros & cons.
ISG has a vast coverage & hence if members participate in the true spirit, possibility of finding hidden gems is indeed vast. Also, it ensures that on any company, however unknown, someone of the other is able to provide useful information (this is my personal experience on ISG, to my delight). However the free membership also may constrain people from posting confidential/insider information which members may feel free to post on a limited membership forum where people are aware both that “big brother” is not on the prowl & that the info will stay in a small group. In a pvt forum it is also possible to invite only “quality” membership. Posting of sensitive information in my opinion is not an insurmountable problem for ISG - it just requires the person posting to either drop a hint or use couched language or just mention that he is tracking a particular company (smart cookies will follow-up & do their own investigation) - of course one has to look out for people who post motivated stuff & claim that they cannot reveal their sources as it is “privileged info”, but in any case everyone needs to do their own due diligence.
On both ISG & N54 there will always be members who by virtue of participating in the true spirit of participation, will feel aggrieved that while they are sharing a lot of good picks, majority of the members are only “taking”, not “giving”. One therefore has to think very carefully on what the forum seeks to achieve - is it to be a forum of sharing that is easily accessible to a vast pool of investors, or a forum of only serious analysis/discussion. In my experience, though the N54 forum seeks to be the latter & has hence restricted membership, it is difficult to ensure this strictly. I would prefer ISG to remain the former, while urging increased participation, purely because the potential of unearthing hidden gems & getting important information on relatively un-researched scrip’s is better. However this needs participation in the true spirit, i.e. of “Giving” too, not only “Taking”.
My final word is this - this forum is the result of the hard work of the founding members & moderators , and I will abide with whatever decision they take.
