Rupee weak as sensex takes a dip

Indian Rupee closed weak on Sep. 17, 2007 with weak performance of local bourses.

India`s benchmark index, Sensex, ended the day on a weak note on account of intense selling pressure in heavyweights and negative global cues. The sensitive index slipped into the negative, touching a low of 15,467.46 in the intraday trades. Select stocks from banking, realty and IT were the under-performers, while cement stocks gained ground.

Asian markets closed on a negative note for the first time in five days today after the U.S. justice department started investigating makers of flash-memory chips which was abetted by a fall in the crude oil prices.The BSE Sensex fell by 0.64%, or 99.37 points, to close at 15,504.43. While the broad-based NSE Nifty fell 23.35 points, or 0.52%, to settle at 4,494.65.

The investors have taken a pause from investing in the local domestic market for a w hile.There is nervousness among the investors on uncertainty about the Federal Reserve decision on cut of rate of interest rate and the pattern of investment inflows.

Indian Rupee closed at 40.56/57, nearly a quarter percent down from Friday`s close of 40.45/46.
