Sensex closes on a cheerful note
Wrap Up: Sensex closes on a cheerful note India`s benchmark index, Sensex, after opening positive at 16,352.32, slipped into the negative, in the morning trades. Later the index was swinging from the positive to the negative and vice-versa in the intraday trades. The 30 share index further gained strength and touched an all time high of 16,616.84 on account of sustained buying pressure in heavyweights and finally wrapped the day on a cheerful note. Sensex recorded its biggest gain this week, since Mar. 23, 2007 and Nifty, ended the week with a whooping gain of 960 points. Select stocks from auto, telecom, cement, banking and realty gained ground, while IT and pharma stocks were the underperformers. Asian markets declined from eight-week high on Friday (Sep. 21, 2007), led by Toyota Motor, after U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Ben S. Bernanke disclosed that, the hous ing problem may get worse in the world`s biggest economy. India`s wholesale price index based Inflation rate dipped 3.32% for the week ended September 8, as against 3.52%, in the previous week. The inflation figures reflected the market estimates, which also stood at 3.32%. The BSE Sensex rose 1.32%, or 216.28 points, to close at 16,564.23 while the broad-based NSE Nifty gained 90 points, or 1.90%, to settle at 4,837.55. The BSE Midcap rose 0.94%, while BSE Small cap rose 0.22%.

Out of the total 2,843 shares traded at the BSE, 1,166 advanced, 1,629 declined, while 48 remained unchanged.
Among the sectoral indices, BSE Auto rose 1.10%, BSE Metal surged 0.70%, BSE Realty increased 1.54%, BSE Bankex rose 0.59% and BSE IT rose 0.86%.
Am ong the gainers at the BSE include Reliance Industries, which soared 3.75% to close at Rs 2,274.40, followed by Bharti Airtel which gained 3.08% to close at Rs 918.35, and SBI advanced 2.78% to end the day at Rs 1,808.25.
Reliance Comm, Reliance Energy, Grasim, HUL, Maruti and ONGC also moved up.
Laggards at the BSE Sensex were ITC, which declined 1.60% to Rs 190.80, Hindalco declined 1.36% at Rs 159.90 and Cipla dipped 0.92% at Rs 167.40. NTPC, Satyam, Ranbaxy and ACC also slipped.
Top Volumes
Ambuja Cement topped the volume chart with 70,532,380 shares being traded, followed by Reliance Petroleum with 28,936,073 shares and Ispat Industries with 14,707,297 shares. NTPC, IDBI, MRPL and SAIL were some of the other chart busters.
