Heavyweights lift Sensex up 180 pts at 16744

The BSE benchmark index, Sensex  is marching ahead as sustained buying pressure is being witnessed in pivotal stocks.

Select stocks from auto, banking and realty led the advances while IT, cement and pharma stocks led the declines.

BSE Sensex is trading at 16,744.18, up 179.95 points, while NSE Nifty is trading strong at 4,887.65, up 50.1 points (12.09 p.m).

The BSE Midcap rose 1.34% and BSE Smallcap rose 0.88%.

Out of the total 2,639 shares traded at the BSE : 1,327 advanced, 1,259 declined while 53 remained unchanged.

Amongst the sectoral indices : BSE Auto rose 1.08%, BSE Realty rose 1.06% and BSE Bankex rose 1.88%, while BSE IT declined 1.47%.

Le aders at the Sensex include : Reliance Energy which rose 3.71% at touch Rs 1,047.05, followed by Maruti which rose 3% at Rs 957.40 and NTPC rose 2.45% at Rs 192.10.
BHEL, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Comm and Reliance Industries were among the other gainers in the Sensex pack. .

Laggards at the BSE Sensex include : Infosys which declined 2.63% at Rs 1,773.95, Ambuja Cement declined 1.66% at Rs 144.75 and ITC declined 1.65% at Rs 187.65.
Satyam, TCS, Dr Reddy`s, Bajaj Auto and Grasim also slipped.
