Power tool cos to relax pre-qualification norms

Centre may relax pre-qualification norms to let new players enter into power equipment manufacturing, reports Economic Times.

In the wake of huge capacity addition programme of over 78,500 MW during Eleventh Plan and confined supply of equipment, such norm has become mandatory.

For companies interested in setting up equipment manufacturing facilities, it may not be mandatory to meet the condition of having prior experience of delivering equipment for which it is interested to put up the facilities.

The companies that are having global experience of supplying similar kind of equipment may also be allowed to set up manufacturing facilities. Also, domestic companies that is partnered with multinational companies c an also set up manufacturing facility in the country on the back of this support or vice versa.

Alterations in the tendering process where bids for equipment supplies may be given to companies interested in setting up a domestic manufacturing facility is also being considered. With the amendment of this norm, manufacturing equipment in the local will be a boost , especially for public sector BHEL.

But shortage of supply equipment 28,600 MW of thermal capacity by the sole supplier of BHEL in the Eleventh Plan have led the chairman of CEA to work on relaxing pre-qualification criteria for companies interested in setting up equipment manufacturing base in the country.

A model contract guidelines with proper sharing of risks in a bid to tide over the shortage of civil contractors in hydro projects is being prepared.
