Sensex recovers smartly

The BSE benchmark index bounced back to positive as sustained buying interest was seen in pivotal stocks. Market was volatile during the day.

Select stocks from telecom, pharma and IT gained ground while cement, auto, banking and realty stocks led the declines.

BSE Sensex is trading at 16,889.16, up 43.33 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 4,939.70, up 7.5 points (3.48 p.m).

The BSE Midcap dipped 0.20% and BSE Smallcap declined 0.11%.

>Out of the total 2,802 shares traded at the BSE : 1,023 advanced, 1,722 declined while 57 remained unchanged.

Among the sectoral indices : BSE Auto declined 0.94%, BSE Bankex declined 0.60%, BSE Realty declined 3.29% and BSE IT declined 0.08%.

Key gainers at the Sensex include : Hindalco surged 2.24% to Rs 166.50, f ollowed by Hindalco which rose 2.21% to Rs 1376.05 and Bharti Airtel rose 2.03% to Rs 964.00. HUL, ACC, Cipla, Satyam, Ranbaxy and Maruti also moved up.

Laggards at the BSE Sensex include : M&M declined 2.53% to Rs 763.90, Bajaj Auto dropped 1.87% to Rs 2,526.00 and SBI dipped 1.40% to Rs 1,807.55. L&T, Reliance Comm, Reliance Energy, Wipro and Ambuja Cement also slipped.
