Market trades firm amidst volatility

The BSE benchmark index, Sensex witnessed some volatile movements in the previous trading hour. The index continues to trade on a firm note.

Select stocks from banking, auto, pharma and metal gained ground, while IT stock led the declines.

BSE Sensex is trading at 17,281.77, up 131.21 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 5,021.80, up 21.25 points (3.40 p.m).

The BSE Midcap rose 1.14% and Smallcap rose 0.60%.

Out of total 2,817 stocks traded at the BSE : 1,362 advanced, 1,393 declined while 62 remained unchanged.

Amongst sectoral indices : BSE Auto rose 0.81%, BSE Bankex rose 1.95% and BSE Metal inched up 3.53%, BSE Realty rose 1.15%, while BSE IT dipped 0.34%.

Key gainers at the Sensex include : Tata Steel which soared 7.88% to touch Rs 857.25, followed by Reliance Energy which surged 6.20% to Rs 1,186.55 and Hindalco increased 4.94% to Rs 172.20.
Ranbaxy, ICICI Bank, SBI, Grasim, ITC and Cipla also moved up.

Laggards at the BSE were : Bharti Airtel which declined 2.11% to Rs 940.10, L&T decreased 1.03% to Rs 2807.90 and M&M dipped 0.96% to Rs 745.00.
ONGC, Ambuja Cement, TCS, Reliance Industries, Wipro and Infosys also slipped.
