Ashok Leyland-Nissan has signed three joint ventures to develop, manufacture and sell light commercial vehicles and power trains.
Ashok Leyland-Nissan will invest USD 575 million in the venture.
A spokesperson from Nissan said three new platforms will cover a range of LCVs from two tonne to 7.5 tonne GVW. The powertrain manufacturing JV will also supply to export markets. The vehicle manufacturing JV is expected touch 100,000 units in three to five years, the spokeperson said.
An all-new generation Nissan Atlas F24 light-duty truck will also be a part of manufacturing JV’s portfolio. Nissan-badged models will operate in the premium end, while Ashok Leyland-badged LCVs will seel in the mass market.
The three new vehicle platforms for initial launch will also mark Ashok Leyland’s foray into the light commercial vehicle which is going at a very strong pace of over 10% at a time when medium and heavy commercial vehicles are struggling for growth. So once these platforms are out in the market, one can see Ashok Leyland’s volume ramping up as will Nissan’s entry into the Indian market and the LCV market.
