Reliance Industries Diamond Mining Subsidiary

Reliance Industries is starting a subsidiary for Diamond mining.

RIL has issued a Press Release for starting Diamond Mining in MP.

Reliance Industries has won a licence for diamond mining in Madhya Pradesh and will invest Rs 1,000 crore in the mines measuring 1,800 sq kms.

Following the licence the company will prospect over an area of 1,800 square km spread over the Rewa, Sidhi and Satna districts in Madhya Pradesh, an official release said here today.

RIL plans to pump in about Rs 1,000 crore in the prospecting work and it is the second private sector company to venture into diamond prospecting in Madhya Pradesh after Australian mining major, Rio Tinto.

Yesterday, Madhya Pradesh Mining Director R K Sharma handed over the prospecting licence for diamond to RIL CGM G K Mohapatra in Bhopal.

Besides diamond, the prospecting licence also includes permission to mine for other minerals like gold, copper, lead, zinc and silver.

The licences have been issued in two parts, one for an area of 1,084 square km and another for an area of 735 square kms in the three districts.

RIL already has a mining licence for coal bed methane in Shahdol and Anuppur districts of Madhya Pradesh.

The prospecting work could provide an economic fillip to the backward Bundelkhand region.

Nearly 500 persons would be directly engaged in prospecting while about 2,000 would be indirectly gaining from the project.

The prospecting would be carried out through airborne geophysical surveys, regional mapping, stream sediment gravel, soil loam sampling and drilling, if required.

Rewa, Sidhi and Satna districts, the closest being 550 km from the state capital, have a sizeable forest area.

The Mineral Resources Department has informed the Union Ministry of Mines that the company, as per an undertaking shall not violate the Indian Forest Act and the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.

Reliance would also share information with the Department of Atomic Energy if radiometric instruments are used during prospecting, the release said.

TATA POWER and SN Power JV

TATA POWER and SN Power JV
Tata Power, India=92s largest private utility, has planned a joint equity investment of Rs 4,000-Rs 5,000 crore over five years to build joint venture hydropower projects with Norway=92s renewable energy firm SN Power. The move signals Tata Power=92s interest to increase its presence in hydro power, even as the government eases norms for investment in renewable energy projects.
The Tata group company, which has a total hydropower generation capacity of 477 mw , on Friday signed an agreement with Norway=92s renewable energy generator SN Power, that will build and operate 2,000 mw by 2015 and 4,000 mw by 2020, in India and Nepal. The company has an independent power generation capacity of over 2,900 mw and plans to add nearly 5,500 mw by 2013.
=93The projects will be done through a jointly-owned service company in India, which will also explore opportunities in other renewable energy sources, including wind and geothermal,=94 said Banmali Agarwala, an executive director at Tata Power. Each joint project will be developed through a special purpose vehicle.
For SPVs in Nepal, SN Power and Tata Power will have equal shareholding. Both companies are also considering to co-develop the Tamakoshi-3 project in Nepal, where SN Power holds licence rights. Nadia Sood, executive vice-president, South Asia, SN Power said: =93Through this partnership, we would explore business opportunities in the region and may also source necessary finance from international lenders.=94
Tata Power said most of the fund raising would be through debt. =93We could also raise funds through selling equity stakes in the projects to international lenders like IFC and ADB,=94 said Tata Power=92s ED S Ramakrishnan. Tata Power has posted a fiscal second quarter net profit of Rs 182 crore, compared to Rs 397 crore last year. =93The company had booked a foreign exchange gain of over Rs 75 crore last year and it could be excluded. We had stable growth during the second quarter this fiscal,=94 he said

Get vision with Gene therapy

Get vision with Gene therapy.

U.S. researchers have helped nearly blind children and adults see again through an experimental gene therapy.

Five children and seven adults who suffered a special form of congenital blindness were able to see again enough to navigate a low-light obstacle course, the researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said. Results were published in the journal The Lancet.

The patients suffered from Leber’s congenital amaurosis (LCA), a condition which sets on in childhood and can lead to total blindness at age 30 to 40. The 12 patients were treated with genetic material in their worst eye. The material was carried piggyback on a virus into the defective eye cells.

All 12 patients showed improvements, but the biggest progress was made by children age 8, 9, 10 and 11. The success of the therapy depended on how far the retina had degenerated.

The patients did not attain normal eyesight, but half of them improved enough that they can no longer be classified as legally blind.

The clinical benefits have persisted for nearly two years since the first subjects were treated with injections of therapeutic genes into their retinas.

India 4G Intel Telecom Spectrum Foray

India 4G Intel Telecom Spectrum Foray

Indian telecom companies like Tata Communications (formerly VSNL), Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications that could bid for broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum to be auctioned by the government in January 2010.

Talks are currently centred on Intel offering Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or WiMAX (which provides for wireless transmission of data and up to 75 Mb/sec speed) technology — one of the popular BWA technologies — to the operator, and the possibility of taking a minority stake through its venture capital arm, Intel Capital.

A global debate is still on, but most experts consider technologies like WiMAX close to fourth generation (4G) services, offering better speeds than 3G on GSM networks. It is constrained by the fact that it does not provide enough mobility currently and experiments are on in some countries to offer full mobile voice and data service on such networks

NHPC to miss target

NHPC to miss target

NHPC Ltd, the country’s largest hydro power producer, is likely to miss its generation capacity addition target of 5,322 Mw for the current Plan period (2007-12) by over 30 per cent owing to geological and law & order problems at project sites. The company will, however, manage to meet its annual commitment of generating 17,200 million units this year.

“We will be able to add around 3,500 Mw by the end of this Plan period. Addition of roughly 2,000 Mw will slip to the next Plan,” said S K Garg, CMD, Miniratna PSU.

The projects which are set to slip to the 12th Plan period include the 800-Mw Parbati II hydro electric project in Himachal Pradesh (originally planned to be commissioned in the current financial year) and five units of 250 Mw each of the 2,000-Mw Lower Subansiri hydro electric project in Arunachal Pradesh (which was to be commissioned in 2010-11).

While the company had managed to add two projects of over 1,000 Mw capacity in the first year of the Plan period, no capacity was added last year. In 2009-10, the company is hopeful of commissioning one of the two targeted projects.

“We would be able to commission the Sewa II project in January 2010,” Garg said. The project was originally scheduled to be commissioned in 2007-08. Six projects of NHPC are slated to come up next year with two more expected to be commissioned in the terminal year of the current Plan period.

India has a hydro power generation capacity of over 36,000 Mw — around a fourth of its total installed capacity. NHPC accounts for over 15 per cent of this hydro generation capacity.

The company, formerly known as the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd, has planned to invest over Rs 21,600 crore in 12 projects by the end of the current Plan period. It had launched its initial public offer (IPO) earlier this year to raise Rs 6,000 crore from the market. The IPO consisted of a fresh issue of 112 crore equity shares by NHPC and an offer of 56 crore equity shares by the government.
